Greek Authorities Bust Organized Crime Network Counterfeiting Alcohol in Attica

<Athens - December 14, 2024>

In a significant victory against organized crime, the Athens Crime Prosecution and Investigation Sub-Directorate successfully dismantled a gang involved in the import, adulteration, and illegal distribution of alcoholic beverages across Attica. The operation, conducted on Saturday, December 14, 2024, resulted in the arrest of 17 individuals and the discovery of two clandestine laboratories for manufacturing counterfeit alcohol.

The coordinated action, spearheaded by the Public Security Department with assistance from OPKE and the Kolonos Police Station, marks a major crackdown on illicit activities harming public health and safety.

A Structured Criminal Operation

Investigations revealed a well-organized gang with a clear hierarchical structure and distinct roles:

  • Leaders: A 47-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man imported alcohol and materials needed for adulteration.
  • Laboratory Operators: Two individuals oversaw the production and bottling of counterfeit drinks in homes in Neos Kosmos and Glyfada.
  • Refillers and Suppliers: Eight members handled bottle refilling, seals, and labels.
  • Store Operators: Six individuals, aged 22 to 76, managed shops where the fake alcoholic products were sold to unsuspecting customers.

What Was Seized During the Operation?

Authorities conducted extensive searches of homes, shops, and warehouses, uncovering a trove of illegal items, including:

  • 3,833 empty bottles and 2,130 liters of alcohol
  • 999 cigarette packs and 60 tobacco packages
  • 8,120 euros in cash
  • Weapons: A Kalashnikov rifle, pistols, revolvers, and over 250 rounds of ammunition
  • Vehicles: Four "operational vehicles" used for transporting goods

The illegal financial benefit derived from the gang's activities is estimated to exceed €500,000.

Why the Crackdown Matters

This operation highlights the severe risks posed by adulterated alcohol, including health hazards for consumers and economic losses for legitimate businesses. The presence of weapons and organized activity also underscores the broader threats posed by such gangs.

Greek law enforcement's swift action reflects their commitment to public safety, combating forgery, and upholding the integrity of the market.

All arrested individuals were brought before the competent prosecution authority, with investigations ongoing. Confiscated items, including alcohol and weapons, will undergo laboratory examination to assist further legal proceedings.

Conclusion

The dismantling of this gang represents a major step toward eradicating illegal alcohol trafficking in Greece. With coordinated police efforts and swift justice, authorities have safeguarded public health, disrupted organized crime, and restored market integrity.
